PSA for newcomers:

On mastodon, unlike almost every other social media platform, we generally don't pay attention to following to follower ratios. Big leagueing is kinda frowned upon here, so don't be afraid to follow back or just follow anyone you find interesting. Go hog wild!

@extinct agree but also don’t feel pressure to follow back it’s ok.

@Torie @extinct this is important. People will try to pressure people saying 'ratios don't matter' but like, that's still making ratios matter, you know. Sometimes I just dont feel like following the person who posts their shitty art every day

@sexybenfranklin @Torie gonna make sure to post twice as much shitty art everyday from now on

@Torie well yes, it's not a requirement that you follow everyone, but i do see more people trying to maintain a low follow count in comparison to their follower count than people having issues with following too many

we're just trying to create an open community that doesn't hold someone being small-time against them in favor of more popular posters (like on twitter)

@extinct yeah. I think I’ve gotten a decent number of angry reply guys that I didn’t follow back but didn’t feel the need to block right away and they were like “stop big leaguing me” and it’s like. Idk. It’s good to be able to just follow or not follow based on what you want to do not based on numbers

@Torie yeah that kinda behavior is also the antithesis of the masto way and if someone starts harassing or guilting someone for not following/following back then they don't deserve the follow in the first place

@extinct @Torie yeah I had similar discussions before elsewhere. I don't expect a follow back. I find what YOU say interesting or entertaining. It doesn't have to be the other way around.

@extinct That's how I know U love me all like I love U all. {Which I don't do because I'm, an intellectual, am the supreme being and should remain neutral because humans and their language have complicated things too much for themselves like now, but let's not go OT okay!?}

@extinct I... was not aware that that was a thing people cared about on other platforms. What a bleak and depressing way to live.

@jakobpunkt clout is a paramount obsession on most social media platforms nowadays. It's pretty insidious and feeds into the toxicity found on those sites and apps

@extinct That is so sad. From a user's pov, the only purpose of social media is enjoyment. Using it in a way that minimizes that enjoyment is just so bonkers to me.
