sometimes when i sketch, i'll just "carve" away some of the mess with my eraser and leave blobs to define features for me. i often actually find this creates a better final image than carefully sketching every detail, but i can't explain why
@extinct I like doing that too. When I render and sketch I think of them as similar. There's this artist I knew that was really good at just rendering forms for hours and they were really impressive because he went into it like that when he drew digitally.
@extinct i do something similar and agree! I think refining the first/rough sketches too much can hamper the final image because you don't give your eye enough freedom to refine the forms so it just sticks with what's there which might not always be right on the first pass and results in lineart that looks 'off' or lifeless compared to the sketch
