@shade And a friend just tipped me off to hereweread on IG, sharing children's books about anti-racism, diversity and inclusion. Looks great at first glance!

@gingerrroot awesome, tysm!

@shade i’ve been struggling with this too, (my kids are K and 1st grade) yesterday we talked about the history of slavery and how the modern police force evolved from it. they seem to inherently understand that people’s lives have value regardless of skin color, so framing the current events in this historical context seemed to help them understand a lot better.

@JohnBrownJr that’s a good idea, tysm!

@shade

What race are the children? To an extent all children should be told the same information, but imo teaching them does need to be tailored to their individual racial experiences. Black children already get taught about race and the police from a young age.

There’s a lot more that could be said about adult privilege over children, the skill required to allow a child autonomy and control in their learning, while also protecting them from burning themselves out or facing material violence, while also stopping them from hurting others (especially less privileged kids) without resorting to authoritarian punishments that make them see your anti-abuse rules as hypocrisy. It’s just very complicated.

@winter we are white. we have never praised cops or anything but children’s shows depicting cops as heroes have already done damage even tho we’ve long cut those out. and i’ve been struggling trying to explain to her what’s happening now, in a way she will understand. she was very confused when she realized cops were hurting people (from overhearing my partner and i discussing things)

@winter and i had a bit of trouble understanding the second half of your comment, i’m not trying to be rude sorry, but i think i’m on the same page as you. we homeschool and plan on doing so for the foreseeable future, tho under normal circumstances she also has outside of the house learning experiences (library, park, groups, etc). i do try to let her explore things on her own but she is one to get overstimulated/burnt out so we have to be careful

@winter if i misunderstood you i’m sorry! it is very complicated tho, that’s for sure

@shade

No worries! I’m autistic and can’t clarify wtf I was saying in the second half of my comment, but it’s also valid for you not to understand it! (Whether you’re autistic or not.) Sometimes things I say don’t make sense. Good luck with your kids 👍
