(please don't reply to this a poll will follow)

it's a white noise machine

there's simply a fan inside and it's specifically built to make just, pure fan noise without actually circulating much air

you can twist the entire body of the thing to change how much air goes through, which adjusts the "volume"

i used one as a kid to sleep but i feel like it's uncommon enough especially in this form that most people don't know what it is

i hate the electronic ones with like a speaker tho

the one thing that SUCKS about these is (probably for really dumbass intellectual property reasons) they're ungodly expensive

it's literally just a fan in a plastic shell and they usually cost $30 or up to $50

it really is surprising me how few folks know about these!

having one was a staple of my childhood and i literally used it until i went to college (just because i didn't want to bother my roommate with it or anything)

i still have it too!

it's so goofy how they're marketed as "woo special """zen""" meditation machines"

just sell them as they are

"THIS THING MAKES WHITE NOISE THATS LOUD AS HELL. YOU MIGHT NEED THAT SORTA THING IN YOUR LIFE FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS. HERE IT IS."

@skelly i have a guess from it's shape and such but have never encountered one before

spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@skelly ohhh. that's not what i was thinking. i was kinda expecting an essential oil diffuser type thing

spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@cuttlefish ah! i can understand that tho

spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@skelly when I worked at an sat tutoring place they used these to deal with the fact that the walls of the learning cubbies were paper thin

re: spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@skelly ok wow, i knew the slits were for adjustable airflow but i'd never have guessed this purpose

re: spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@leptoceph quite honestly i'm surprised with how few folks know what these are!

seriously was an absolute staple of my childhood tho, i honestly used it up until college until i stopped just because i didn't want to bug my roommate and got used to sleeping without it

i still have it tho! mostly because my parents gave it to me because they're so expensive lmao

re: spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@skelly omg i neeeeeed one

re: spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@FirstProgenitor you can buy the one specifically in this image at target apparently

the one downside to these: they're relatively expensive for no reason. $30-$50. it's just a fan in a plastic case, ugh

re: spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@skelly "yoga sleep" lmao
but thank you !!

re: spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@FirstProgenitor yeaaah i think they market these one of two ways

- super special yoga sound device mmmmm all calm and """zen"""

- this thing helps your baby sleep so you can get some fuckin sleep too, we know you need it

spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@skelly I suppose it never occurred to me that there'd be a dedicated fan-based white noise machine because I'd always just use a fan

spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@proto @skelly I have often just pointed a fan away from me and run it for the white noise continuously until it got hot again :)

re: spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@skelly You know, I only know what this is because Fran Blanche did a video about one the other week

re: spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@Nik lol I actually saw that yt video in my recommends

I didn't watch it, but that's what made me think of this poll

spoiler - do not read before answering the poll

@skelly I only recently learned about them when Fran did a video where she took one apart.

@skelly I could use one of these tbh. I use a box fan to make noise but sometimes it moves too much air around and chills me.
